Small target big weapon. This is something that is taught by martial arts schools all over the country and throughout the world. What is a small target? A small target is an area of the body that is small in size. Typically a small target is not much larger than your fist. Examples of small target could be fingers, wrist, temple, toes, nose, eyes, testicles and can include internal body parts such as the heart or the kidney if the weapon being used is larger than those areas. These are areas where you typically want to use a big weapon. A big weapon is something the size of your fist, knee, elbow, foot or heel. The concept behind small target big weapon is simple. What you want to do is overwhelm the target with the weapon. You want to apply as much kinetic energy and mass to the target as possible. This creates an overload in the target area and it will inflict more pain. This technique also allows a greater amount of energy to be transferred even when the contact area is not hit squarely. A palm strike, which is an open hand technique by where the palm is open and the heel of the hand strikes an target such as the nose, chain, eyes or sternum. In a palm strike the hand is open with the fingers extended similar to the hand in a parade way. The strike is made with the heel of the Palm. When properly applied, energy is transferred from your feet through your legs to your upper body through your shoulder, elbow and forearm into the heel of the palm. This creates a massive amount of energy, resulting in the target becoming a overridden by the energy and resulting in more pain. Another example of this would be a knee or fist to the groin. The opposite side of this coin is big target small weapon. Big targets are going to be such things as the head, stomach, back, upper arm, forarm, upper leg and lower leg. Here, small weapons work best. If you slap your leg with your hand, you might feel a stinging sensation. However, if you use your fist or smaller object such as a kubotan (a martial arts weapon) the pain is much more intensified. Ever had somebody give you a charlie horse? This is a classic example of large target small weapon. Because of the size of the large area is very good at dispersing energy over the entire region. But not good at dispersing pinpoint energy. In other words, a large target area is not able to absorb the small weapon energy as it is a weapon that is of equal or greater size. A strike to the stomach using the fist will hurt. However, using the knuckles will create more pain. To understand is further, hold out your forearm and extend your fingers similar to you what you would see when somebody was going to use a karate chop. Now roll back only the first to knuckles of your hand. In essence, just stopping short of making a fist. You should be able to draw a straight line through the first and second knuckles of your hand straight up your arm to your elbow. By using your knuckles, instead of your fist you pinpoint the energy directed at the target delivering a deeper blow in creating more pain. We do not recommend this technique for striking hard areas of the body such as the head. |
