Depending on where you live, you may have to rely heavily on public transportation services to get around. Those who reside in rural areas need to have their own vehicle, but people in large cities regularly use taxis, busses and train systems to take them everywhere they need to go. The methods of transportation are safe and efficient, but you never know who you may run into while entering or exiting a public transport vehicle.
Inter City Transportation Big city residents utilize busses and trains to get to work and back, take them to locations for social purposes and even for quick trips to the store. Much of the travel is done during peak hours, so there will be plenty of people around. This may lead to crowded situations, but it also provides a safety in numbers scenario for travelers. Criminals look for victims that are separated from others, so you are far less likely to be accosted when in a large group of people. Other times you may find yourself waiting at a pick up point where very few people are around. When this happens, stay near the largest number of people you can find. Criminals may be lurking in the background, waiting for someone to wander off on their own where they will be isolated. If there aren't other people around, at least wait in a well lit area even if it means standing away from a bus stop. A predator will take advantage of the dark and use it to gain the element of surprise against you, so remain in the safest area you can find until you can see the bus driver. Give them a wave to alert them that you intend to get on the bus. When you are on a bus that has only a few passengers, sit up close to the front. A criminal is less likely to single you out if you are near the driver. Pay close attention to anyone who exits at the same place as you after riding on any form of public transportation. It is probably just a coincidence, but it's smart to keep an eye on them in case they try to follow you. If you believe you are being followed, move quickly to the nearest public location and stop to see if they pass by. Don't leave until you are certain they are no longer around. Call the police if you are not sure that you are safe. Whatever you do, don't go home if someone is trailing you. The last thing you want is for a stalker to have your address. The final part of your journey home may involve a taxi ride. When you get in, check the driver's certification and make sure the picture id matches the person driving the vehicle. Take the next cab if you do not feel safe for any reason. Flights As you pack your bags for a flight, keep in mind all the new regulations about what you can and can not bring on board. Pack lightly, and bring only what you need. Keep your bags close by you at all times when you get to the airport terminal. Every airport has security officers on duty, so if you feel threatened by anyone, find a guard and ask for help. |
