It has been said that there is safety in numbers. It is also true that there can be danger in numbers- depending on how you approach the situation.
When Taking Local Transportation- Such as a Bus or Train If you live in a city, cars can tend to be not only inconvenient (like parking and going through dense traffic) but also very expensive. They often do not offer much of an advantage in speed so it makes sense to utilize the transportation available.
Here are some useful tips: - While waiting for a bus, streetcar, or train - stand near others who are also waiting.
- If the immediate area is deserted or in darkness, stand near an occupied building on in a lighted area until transportation arrives.
- Once on a bus, streetcar or train, be aware of those around you. If someone looks or acts suspicious, notify the driver or operator.
- If the coach is empty or nearly empty, sit as far up front and as close to the driver as possible.
- If someone begins to bother you, get up and notify the driver or operator immediately.
- Upon arriving at your stop or station, be aware of those who get off with you.
- Don't take a chance! When going to or from a stop or station, if you feel you are being followed, go to the nearest occupied building and ask for assistance.
- After dark, attempt to get off in well-lighted areas. Use only well-lighted streets to reach your final destination.
When FlyingUnless you happen to own your own private jet, you will be traveling with may other people and be in crowds when going somewhere via airplane. These simple tips can make your trip much more worry-free and enjoyable.
Here are some useful tips: - Make sure you pack only what you need. It is enough of a headache these days what with airport security and all but lugging around a lot of bags can make you an easy target for someone to take something from you.
- Watch your bags. It literally only takes a second for them to disappear.
- Consider what luggage you use. Designer luggage and handbags may be a nice status symbol- but if you know that the Cartier Luggage you are traveling with is expensive, so will a good thief. He or she will likely surmise that if you can afford luggage like that, then it's likely the contents are going to be valuable as well.
- Only use approved ground transportation. It is easy to get taken for a ride in more ways than one by an unscrupulous driver hanging around at an airport. All companies that are legitimate nowadays will have drivers who carry identification and most have some sort of set rates going to destinations or to an airport.
- Again, once at your destination, unless you are renting car or have arranged transportation through a tour company or the like, follow all of the above rules for public transportation anywhere you go.
